What is an SSL certificate?
SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer.
SSL web server certificates are used to secure and authenticate websites, thereby ensuring safe electronic commerce across the Internet. They are used when collecting sensitive information to give your site users confidence their information can not be seen by others.
How does SSL certificate work?
The SSL certificate, once “applied” to your website, allows the web server and the web browser to encrypt the data that’s transmitted between them.
Do I need an SSL certificate?
Yes, you do. While these used to be optional or used just for secure transactions it has now become standard for all websites to have SSL certificates. Google also include this in their ranking system now when ordering their search results. In short, if you do not have one your site could be penalised and appear further down the results.
How Much Do They Cost?
We offer a FREE standard 256bit SSL certificate free for all sites hosted with us. The only disadvantage to the free certificate is that it has to be renewed every three months rather than yearly like a paid certificate. The free certificates we use are provided by Let’s Encrypt.
