One of the questions we get asked most often when we build a new website for a client is. “Why can't I find my website when I search for it on Google?”
When you launch a new website, it may not appear on Google search results right away. Here’s why:
- Indexing Process: Google uses automated bots, called crawlers or spiders, to explore the web and index new content. When a website is launched, it takes time for these crawlers to discover the site, analyse its content, and index it in Google's vast database.
- Crawling Frequency: Google doesn’t crawl every website at the same frequency. Popular or frequently updated sites get crawled more frequently. A brand-new website might not be crawled immediately, especially if it lacks backlinks or is not linked from already indexed websites.
- Content Quality and Relevance: Google prioritizes high-quality, relevant content. If your website is new, Google might take time to evaluate its content, structure, and relevance to determine how it fits into search results.
- Technical Issues: Sometimes, technical issues like incorrect robots.txt files, missing sitemaps, or no index tags can prevent Google from crawling or indexing a new site.
- Competitive Landscape: If your website is in a highly competitive niche, it might take longer to rank because Google has to determine how your content compares to established sites.
How to Speed Up Indexing
- Submit a Sitemap: Use Google Search Console to submit your sitemap directly to Google.
- Request Indexing: You can request Google to index your site or specific pages using the “URL Inspection” tool in Google Search Console.
- Build Backlinks: Getting other websites to link to yours can help Google discover your site faster.
- Update Content Regularly: Frequent updates signal to Google that your site is active, encouraging more frequent crawling.
By understanding these factors and taking proactive steps, you can help your new website appear on Google more quickly.
