Should I auto play videos on my site? Print

We would have to give this one a firm NO!

Negatives of autoplaying videos

1. There has been extensive research done on this and to put it bluntly, autoplaying music or videos annoys most visitors. Annoy them, and they leave, so not only have you lost a potential new client, you have wasted whatever time or money you spent to get them to your site in the first place.

2. Some people have very small data plans on their devices autoplaying videos if they do not want to see them will literally cost them money, the result? They leave, you lose!

3. The aim of any website is to create leads or sales, to do that effectively you need to get your visitor interacting with your site as soon as possible, in other words we need to get them taking actions (clicking/tapping things). Action leads to more action, once a visitor takes one action like clicking a play button on a video they have started to interact with your site, they are more likely to continue to interact with your site. This is a REALLY important part of improving the results your site gets for your business. Autoplay that video, and we have not achieved this significant first interaction.

4. Trust us, they are WAY more likely to watch your whole video by giving them the choice than they are if you force it on them.  Most people can't resist a play button.

5. It slows down the loading of your page (Even more so on mobile devices). If your page takes more than 3 seconds to load because of your autoplaying video, you will lose the visitor.

6. The loss in page speed can also damage your page speed scores, which can negatively affect how your page will do in search engines.

Positives of autoplaying videos

You will have way fewer customers to deal with, so will have much more time to do all those household chores you don't really want to do.
